Kerrigan has done many things to pay the bills, from law enforcement to belly dance instructor. Now she’s finally able to have the career she’d decided upon at thirteen when she announced to her very skeptical family that she was going to “grow up to be a romance novelist.” Whether she’s writing about Celtic Druids, Victorian bad boys, or brash Irish FBI Agents, Kerrigan uses her borderline-obsessive passion for history, her extensive Celtic ancestry, and her love of Shakespeare in almost every story.
Her first novel with St. Martin’s Press, THE HIGHWAYMAN, is available now and will be followed by THE HUNTER in February of 2016.
As always a big thank you to St. Martins Press and Netgalley for providing us with a copy of these books so that we could bring you this review.
I wrote 1 review for both books not because they can’t be read independently, but because I read both books back to back. As soon as I read the first book I knew I had to jump into the second one right away because I needed to know what happened with these characters next. In the first book Dorian and Farrah have a big connection one that you don’t exactly know why it exists until much later into the book. The way that they open up to each other and depend on each other is amazing. Though Farrah has spent much of her life living as a widow since she lost the man of her heart when she lost the man she loved deeply (even too young to know what love and marriage was all about). She knows there is only one person who would ever own her heart. She is willing to do anything, even marry a man she knows would never love her, to save herself from secrets and the past that can destroy her. Dorian has lived a hard life he has been through a lot and only wants to make sure he fulfills a promise once made. Its a pretty story about how people can change and redeem themselves and learn to trust when all has been lost in the past.
Some of this follows in the second book when Christopher learns he too must change and trust even after all the pain he’s suffered in the past. Millie has promised to not only herself but her son to always put them first, but when things aren’t going the way they should be and someone is out to hurt her because of what she knows and the past that she is always hiding, she needs to trust on a man who could easily be the one to end her. Christopher begins to fall in love with a woman, and this is something he never thought would ever be possible.
The one theme both these books have is that growth and trust building that two men who were tortured and lived dark pasts is possible. It is hard and something takes both these men some time to learn. And its two women who are strong and willing to prove they don’t need men to keep them safe, but also bring out the best in both these men.
I devoured both these books quickly which is why I give them both 5 regal kisses…
Happy Reading… Adri
